ITCHING & SCRATCHING

As every dog and cat is different, results will vary based on a number of factors including environment, severity of the condition, age and genetics. Many dogs and cats with itching and scratching have greatly benefited from the addition of NuVet Plus® to their diet.

Causes

Similar to humans, dogs and cats can develop cases of itching (pruritus) from a multitude of causes that are generally environmental, allergic, infectious or neurogenic in nature.

The term “itchy skin disease” commonly refers to:

• All forms of contact dermatitis (e.g., allergic, flea, fly bite, food allergy and canine/feline atopy from seasonal pollen);

• Parasite infestations (e.g., chiggers, fleas, damp hay itch, fly larvae, lice, maggots, scabies mange, ticks and walking dandruff mange); and

• Lick granuloma (acral pruritic dermatitis), which is a shiny red skin ulcer that develops from continuous wrist or ankle licking.

Vaccination injection sites, brush and branch scratches also trigger the itch and scratch response that cause canine hot spots (pyoderma, or acute moist dermatitis) and the raw, red patches that develop on fur and skin from excessive itching. Hot spots will appear in easy-to-reach spots behind the ears, in the ear flaps, on the legs, flanks, feet and rear end and quickly inflame from constant biting and licking.

Symptoms

Characteristics of itchy skin diseases typically are, constant scratching, skin biting and body rubbing against objects to relieve the itching sensation. Neurogenic pruritus, which is stimulated by nerve impulses, offers the greatest treatment challenge.

To determine if the ailment is caused by allergies or fleas, it may be helpful to search your pet’s coat for any visible parasites. Pay attention to a change in behavior that may result from a change in dog food or visiting a new environment, which may harbor a potential allergen.

Complications

Pets themselves are often the source of further complications.  Unlike humans, dogs and cats are not able to reason that continued scratching will cause more harm than good. Pets will often scratch in excess causing open sores which are susceptible to infection. If infection does occur, your dog is likely to spread the infection to other parts of the body, as bacteria will move from one spot to another on the paws and mouth. Pus ingestion from infected sites provides a convenient method for any infection to spread to the intestinal tract, creating its own set of treatment issues aside from those presented by the itchy skin disease itself.

NuVet Plus

Most itching and scratching can be prevented with regular grooming and proper nutrition. A dog with a weakened immune response is more likely to develop allergies and attract parasites than a dog with a strong immune system. It is the immune system after all, that provides the first line of defense against allergens and invading substances.

Providing a nutritional supplement which contains human-grade ingredients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids herbs and more can help promote superior immune system health. NuVet Plus® contains those ingredients and can help strengthen the immune system. They also help alleviate the symptoms and help to  decrease the incidence of reactions associated with existing allergies. A healthy blood stream transports essential nutrients throughout the body and flushes out toxins and invading substances. Amino acids, anti-oxidants, calcium and proteins help to detoxify  the blood stream, strengthen the skin and the immune system from insect and parasitic attack, support the cell repair that is vital to healthy skin and rebuild hypersensitive nerve coverings (sheaths).

Supporting your pet’s diet with a high quality food containing essential protein will add critical nutrients to their bodies.  Equally important is providing food, that is low on grains like corn and wheat as well as “meat by-products”. However, even a high quality pet food alone isn’t enough.  NuVet supplements are a vital component, helping fill the nutritional gaps to keep your dog or cat healthy.  It boosts internal defenses and provides critical nutrients to the blood, bones, and skin as well as supporting the vital organs to help prevent the damaging effects of free radicals. It starts with a healthy blood stream that transports the essential nutrients throughout the body, flushing out toxins and invading substances.

NuVet Plus® is a natural supplement made from the finest human-grade ingredients.  It is formulated in an FDA registered laboratory used to produce human pharmaceuticals.  The use of this kind of high-tech superior quality manufacturing facility is especially uncommon in the pet industry; however NuVet Labs® knows that no greater value can be placed on our beloved four legged family members.

Beneficial Ingredients

Listed below are a few of the NuVet Plus® ingredients that may be beneficial for your pet's itching and scratching:

• Alfalfa – Alfalfa is a rich source of many of the vitamins, minerals, amino acids (especially tryptophan), digestive enzymes and protein that are necessary for a balanced diet. It also contains Vitamins A, B-6, D, E, and K, beta-carotene, fiber, chlorophyll, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, potassium and several trace minerals. The alfalfa included in NuVet Plus® builds a strong and healthy body that easily resists attack by the invading organisms that irritate the skin and encourage the itch and scratch response.

• Amino acids – Amino acids function as immune system stimulants that enhance the antioxidant activity of certain enzymes and strengthen and protect an animal’s skin against insect bites, injury and parasitic infections. L-Methionine, in particular, improves and strengthens the skin and aids in wound healing to prevent the development of lick granulomas.

• Blue green algae – This substance is an excellent source of chlorophyll -- which acts as a detoxifier and blood cleanser -- and sulfolipids, which resist viral infections.  This ingredient contains numerous trace minerals and more protein than any other whole food; it strengthens the immune system, aids in wound healing, boosts the production of red blood cells and provides support to the brain and nervous systems. Supplementation with blue green algae provides an ideal defense against insect and parasitic invasion and an effective agent for strengthening hypersensitive nerve sheaths against the itching response. No insect bites, bacterial or fungal infection eliminates the urge to itch!

• Brewer’s yeast – Brewer’s yeast, a rich source of B complex vitamins, contains the trace mineral chromium and a high quality protein that aids in tissue formation and the assimilation of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Vitamins B-1, B-9 and B-12, in particular, support the nervous system and strengthen nerve sheaths against hypersensitive itching responses.

• Cat’s claw (una de gato) – Cat’s claw is an ancient herb from the Peruvian rain forest that contains bio-active compounds, such as sterols, polyphenols, proanthocyanidins, oxindole alkaloids, quinovic acid, glycosides and triterpenes, acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent and boosts the immune system. Its antioxidant properties strengthen the immune system against insect and parasitic infections; its anti-inflammatory properties keep skin tissue inflammation to a minimum in infected animals and discourages the itch and scratch response.

• Chicken liver – Chicken liver is a rich source of the B complex vitamins that support overall health by fighting inflammation and boosting immunity, thus supporting proper nutrient absorption, minimizing damage from contact allergen reactions and strengthening the body against the development of allergies in the first place. NuVet Plus® paddle-dries its chicken liver to more effectively retain Vitamin B complex, Vitamins A and C, and important omega fatty acids.

• Evening primrose oil – This valuable ingredient contains high amounts of gamma-linolenic acid, which is one of the Omega-6 essential fatty acids that the body requires for the stimulation and maintenance of new skin and nerve cell growth. Studies have also shown that evening primrose oil relieves pain and inflammation; therefore, this substance is essential to the prevention of hot spots that might result from skin inflammation and excessive itching.

• Potassium citrate – Potassium is necessary to proper nervous system function, particularly the transmission of nerve impulses (such as the urge to itch). NuVet Plus® utilizes potassium citrate, a highly bio-available source of potassium, to support nervous system health.
